We’re proud to announce that Alfred Carlson, Esq., and Leah Cilo, Esq., of Martin Law, authored an amicus brief on behalf of Pennsylvania Association for Justice (PAJ) in a landmark case that has changed the course of Pennsylvania Workers' Compensation law.

In Kristina Steets v. Celebration Fireworks, Inc. (WCAB), Pennsylvania Supreme Court reversed the Commonwealth Court and ruled that the estates of injured workers are entitled to specific loss benefits after death — regardless of the cause of death. This decision overturns Estate of Harris and secures long-overdue justice for the families of severely injured workers.

The case centered on Kristina Steets, who suffered catastrophic work injuries in an explosion at a fireworks factory and later died as a result of those injuries. Her estate was denied compensation for the specific loss benefits that she was awarded. Thanks to this decision, her estate — and others like it — can now rightfully recover the benefits they deserve.

This is a significant legal victory for the family of Ms. Steets and for injured workers in Commonwealth. Martin Law is honored to have played a role in this victory along with the PAJ, a tireless advocate for fairness in the legal system.
