Legal Secretary, Workers’ Compensation

Summary:

Assists legal team in all clerical functions as directed by the team attorney or office manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Communicates with clients, court counsel, adjusters, medical providers, nurse case managers and others for case management.
  • Answers all client phone calls and addresses all questions and concerns while keeping clients informed of the progress of their case and obtaining status updates.
  • Completes all dictation transcriptions from team attorney.
  • Prepares and electronically files legal documents, obtains documents from the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, formats and files briefs, uploads correspondence and exhibits through the Workers’ Compensation Automation and Integration System (WCAIS).
  • Files and answers petitions with Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and/or Judge.
  • Opens and enters all mail into the case notes, generates all necessary response letters, and handles the checklist within our case management system.
  • Answers attorney’s direct phone lines and monitors emails; serves as liaison between attorney, clients, and other parties.
  • Maintains tickler dates appropriately with the use of a checklist system within our case management system.
  • Maintains attorney’s event calendar (depositions, hearings, meetings, etc.).

Other Responsibilities:

  • Takes new client intakes (after 90 days on the job).
  • Processes all attorney dictation and action items stemming from the dictation.
  • Schedules client appointments and/or telephone conferences
  • Maintains client’s file in case management system, updating information as necessary.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills coupled with attention to detail.
  • Possesses sound judgment and is decisive.
  • Legal experience (preferred)

  • Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year College or University; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of the Internet, Spreadsheet, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Case Management software. Excellent typing skills required.  Dictation transcription is necessary.
